Description
What will I learn?
Safeguarding of the child is the first priority, it is everybody’s responsibility. Any person that is in contact with children and their families has a role to play in keeping them safe.
The Wales Safeguarding Procedures build on the statutory guidance of the Social Services and Well-Being (Wales) Act 2014. This course has been developed in line with Group B standards of the National safeguarding training, learning and development standards, to help you understand your expectations as a childcare practitioner should you have reasonable cause to suspect a child is at risk of abuse, neglect or harm. It will give you extra reassurance and confidence in your practice to recognise signs of harm and implement the procedures for reporting any concerns you might have.
The course has been designed to meet the Group B requirements outlined within Annex C of the National Minimum Standards for regulated childcare for children up to the age of 12 years (NMS).
Key topics include:
- Legislation, national policies and codes of conduct related to professional practice
- Working in ways that safeguard children from abuse, harm and neglect
- Factors, situations and actions that could lead or contribute to abuse, harm or neglect
- How to report, respond and record concerns or allegations related to safeguarding
Course duration: 4-6 hours

“I’ve completed the Group B training. I found it really comprehensive and also provided the learner with banks of information that I can refer back to at any point. As it is such a difficult subject I really liked the fact that I could stop and start at any time when the subject became too difficult. I ended up completing it on three different days and I’ve advised my staff to do the same so they do not feel too overwhelmed”. – Nicola from Lullabyz Nursery, Newport
NDNA Cymru Safeguarding Group B online training is in-line with NMS and changes that are coming into force November 2024.
CIW recommend a face-to-face course where possible. Where this is not possible a blended learning approach is acceptable. Consider incorporating the following resources and learning methods which reflect the knowledge and competence for the role and responsibilities of practitioners undertaking group B training:
- Pre- and post-course workbooks, written information, videos, podcasts and other materials (all from a reliable source)
- One-to-one supervision, mentoring and management support for discussion and reflection on practice
- Shadowing, team meetings and peer support groups
- Training exercises including case studies and practice reviews
- The All Wales induction framework for health and social care workers has a safeguarding workbook to help practitioners understand their role and responsibility for safeguarding people, and it encourages reflective practice and reflection on learning taken
- Resources for practitioners to record learning and development.
