UNCRC for nurseries

In January 2024, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024 gained Royal Assent, successfully incorporating the UNCRC into Scots Law. As a sector, Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) already take a child’s rights-based approach to working with children, however as time goes on the landscape of children’s rights will adapt and the legislation will move the conversation further. Now is the time to enhance your rights-based practice.

This is where NDNA can support you! Our UNCRC Incorporation Toolkit for ELC providers in Scotland is below.

We have worked with four member ELC providers in Scotland to create this bespoke toolkit specialising in developing your rights-based practice.

The member-exclusive toolkit is in two parts:

Children’s Rights and Wellbeing Impact Assessment Step-by-Step Guide

This step-by-step guide will support you through a specialised and simplified CRWIA process to ensure that you are embedding children’s rights throughout your nursery.

Hear how our member nurseries have found using the UNCRC Toolkit so far…

“With the extremely useful toolkit, it is clearly broken down and as you go through the stages it becomes a lot easier.”

Flying Start Nursery

“We found the NDNA UNCRC “Listen to me! Children’s Views on Children’s Rights” invaluable in our understanding of what we needed to be included in our floor book. While completing the floor book the staff soon realised how much the Children’s Rights are already embedded in what we do, but it was lovely to tease this out and especially to use the observations of our youngest children to get their voices heard within the book. A great big well done once again to NDNA for making it clearer and simpler for different settings”

Treasure Island Nursery

“I feel the toolkit (step-by-step guide) will cut our time down by half. Floorbooks have been part of our development plans since opening in July 2020 alongside promoting children’s understanding of their rights. Being part of the development of the document ‘listen to me’ gave our whole team support, guidance and motivation to drive forward ‘children’s rights’ through more involvement and child-led delivery of information in our floorbooks. The document led us to think more about how and when we ‘listen to our children’ and give them each a voice. This has made improvements across learning and development in both the children and the team.”
