A sought-after speaker, Ashley will share his own hard-hitting and inspirational story of navigating through the care system. He will talk about how you can identify and build trust with children who are vulnerable, how to support them within your setting and how to ensure that interactions with these children in nursery put them on a positive path to self-esteem and aspiration.

Join us for a free (virtual) cuppa and an afternoon with Sam Wass and NDNA’s Purnima Tanuku OBE, sponsored by Hope.

In this session Professor Sam Wass, BabyDev Lab at the University of East London, will focus on funded childcare places and changes in child-practitioner ratios for two-year-olds.

Two interacting brains – recent findings from neuroscience on the importance of responding individually to a child’s attention bids and communicative signals

This session will explore:

  • Funded childcare places
  • Changes in child-practitioner ratios for two-year-olds
  • The importance of practitioners responding individually to children
  • Emotional development and self-regulation
  • Dual brain and physio recordings – showing how child and adult brain activities and stress fluctuations react when interacting

More about Sam

Professor Sam Wass studied at Oxford, London, and Cambridge, and currently runs the BabyDev Lab at the University of East London.

 

Sam’s research is funded by Research Councils UK, the European Research Council, and Medical Research Council and others to research how children and adults mutually influence one another during their early interactions, focusing on stress, attention and learning in typical and atypically developing children (including ADHD, ASD, anxiety and others). He is also a co-founder of Nest Kids, which provides education and support services for Early Years, and works with commercial organisations including Melissa & Doug, Disney+ and LEGO. He has fronted press campaigns promoting awareness about early child development for Public Health England and the Department of Education, and he appears regularly in the media as an expert in child development, including as an on-screen child psychologist in five series of the multi-award-winning Channel 4 show The Secret Life of 4- and 5-Year-Olds.
