Early years activity: Picture Perfect
Here, children are given the opportunity to create their very own nursery photo using props, backdrops and as much creativity as they can muster! This fun activity supports children to explore self-expression, confidence and identity while capturing a special memory of their time at nursery.
Picture Perfect activity learning aims
- Build self-confidence and celebrate individuality
- Communication and language as children talk about how they want their photo to look
- Explore creativity through props, poses and imagination
- Develop motor skills as they handle props, operate the camera etc.
Resources you will need for this activity
- Simple to operate camera or tablet with photo function
- Backdrop – plain white and coloured sheets, colourful fabric
- Prop box – hats, scarves, sunglasses, soft toys, flowers, costumes, masks etc.
- Printer/photo paper if you choose to print the photos.
Picture Perfect activity outline
- Gather the children and discuss what they know about photos – why do we take them? What do they show? Share some examples of nursery photos, maybe from recent trips or special days
- Ask the children: “If you could design your own photo, what would you wear or hold? How would you like to look in the photo?” If any children have experience of a photo studio, encourage them to share it with others
- Set up the photo studio – children can choose the location, a backdrop and a camera/tablet
- Each child chooses their own outfit, props, poses and expressions. You may choose to model the process by choosing your own outfit, props etc, adopting a pose and asking another adult or child to take your photo
- Encourage children to work together to achieve the photos – helping each other choose clothes and props, poses, and taking turns to be the photographer
- Children can take a mix of individual, small group and whole room photos
- Share the photos together on a screen. If printing, children could choose their favourite photos, explaining their choices
- Make a photo exhibition and invite families to view their children’s creations.
How to extend this activity
