Healthy Teeth – Tips for Parents

Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood health issues but it’s largely preventable with the right care at home. By encouraging parents to take a proactive approach to their child’s dental routine, you can help set the foundation for strong, healthy teeth and a confident smile.

Top tips

  1. Establish a routine and build toothbrushing into your daily schedule so children develop a habit of teeth cleaning (brush at least twice a day)
  2. Be a good role model by brushing your teeth together with your child, modelling the correct technique and time scales for toothbrushing (at least two minutes)
  3. Use soft toothbrush and a pea sized amount of a children’s fluoride toothpaste. Demonstrate circular movements across and behind all teeth, remembering to brush their gums too
  4. Cut out or reduce sugary drinks and snacks and encourage children to drink water and eat healthy snacks; remember to be a good role model yourself
  5. Visit the dentist for regular check-ups – this will help your child to get used to the sights and sounds of a dentist and the process of having your teeth checked.

Offer lots of praise as your child brushes their teeth, admiring their bright smile in a mirror together.

Disclaimer: Activities with children must always be risk assessed, including for allergies or choking. Children must always have adequate supervision. Resources and materials must always be appropriate for children’s age and stage of development.
