New children’s minister appointed for Wales

As a result of the First Minister Eluned Morgan’s reshuffle, Dawn Bowden MS has been appointed as the new Minister for  Children and Social Care.

Ms Bowden has been the Minister for Social Care since March 2024 but the children’s brief has now been added to her portfolio.

Chief Executive Purnima Tanuku OBE NDNA Cymru said: “We welcome Dawn Bowden MS to the new role of Minister for Children and Social Care. Dawn has been Minister for Social Care since March this year – with the addition of the children’s brief to this role, it’s vital that she makes the learning aspect of the Early Childhood Play Learning  and Care sector a priority. It’s this learning that gives children the foundations for their lifelong education and life chances. We hope there will now be stability for the sector supporting children in their vital first few years.

“We look forward to working with the Minister at an important time for the sector: the current review into the funding rate for the Childcare Offer needs a positive outcome, with the rate reviewed annually and providers need support to tackle the workforce recruitment and retention crisis.”
