Early years practitioners taking part in flexible Maths Champions training to build confidence in supporting children’s maths development

Make summer CPD count with Maths Champions

Give your team the confidence with summer CPD to support children’s early maths development before the new academic year begins

Summer CPD can be a valuable opportunity for early years settings to invest in staff development before the pace of the new academic year begins. NDNA’s Maths Champions programme offers flexible online training designed to help practitioners build confidence in supporting children’s maths development through practical, engaging everyday experiences.

With July places almost full and September places now available, settings can secure their place ahead of the new academic year and ensure their team is ready to build confidence in early maths from the start of term.

Why summer CPD is the perfect time to invest in your team

Summer CPD gives early years settings the opportunity to focus on professional development before autumn pressures begin. Whether your setting remains open throughout the summer or operates term-time only, Maths Champions provides flexible online training that works around your team’s schedule.

What is Maths Champions?

Maths Champions is NDNA’s flexible online training programme designed to help early years practitioners develop confidence in supporting children’s maths development through practical, meaningful everyday experiences.

The programme supports practitioners to recognise and create more opportunities for maths learning through play, routines and interactions, helping settings build stronger maths-rich environments.

Designed specifically for early years settings, Maths Champions allows teams to complete training at a pace that works for them, making it easier to prioritise CPD alongside the demands of running a busy setting.

The programme provides:

  • Flexible online learning designed around your setting
  • Practical strategies that can be embedded into everyday practice
  • Support to build practitioner confidence in early maths
  • Resources to strengthen maths-rich environments
  • A structured approach to improving maths provision

Why invest in Maths Champions?

Early experiences with maths play an important role in helping children develop confidence, curiosity and the foundations needed for future learning.

Maths Champions supports practitioners to feel more confident in identifying opportunities for maths throughout the day, from play and exploration to everyday routines and conversations.

Research from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) found that children in settings taking part in Maths Champions made the equivalent of three additional months’ progress in maths and language development compared with children in settings not involved in the programme.

Settings involved in the programme have also reported positive changes, including increased practitioner confidence, stronger maths provision and greater engagement from children.

Why start now?

For many settings, September is a busy time of year. New children join, teams settle into new routines and priorities quickly build.

Starting your Maths Champions journey during the summer months allows your team to focus on professional development before autumn pressures begin.

The flexible nature of the programme means practitioners can complete training around their existing commitments, whether your setting is quieter during the summer period or continues to operate throughout the holidays.

By investing in your team now, you can begin the new academic year with practitioners who feel confident and prepared to support children’s early maths development.
