Observation, Assessment and Planning in Wales

In this workshop, we will reflect on the quality and usefulness of observations and assessments in developing our practice and pedagogy.

  • We will consider ways in which we can:
  • Use a variety of observation methods
  • Use analysis of observation to inform our day-to-day responsive planning
  • Ensure a balance of observations across the five developmental pathways
  • Take enough time to observe, listen to and tune into each child to see that they are progressing well
  • Be mindful that our interactions do not interrupt children’s play and learning
  • Ensure parents’ contributions are valued in the process of getting to know the child

This online workshop will be repeated 3 times to suit the preferences of practitioners.
To encourage interactive discussion, numbers will be limited to 25 per session.

(This session is funded by the Welsh Government. Previously delivered by The Learning Partnership (TLP) Wales in January 2025. Updated by NDNA Cymru to include the Assessment Arrangements for 0-3 years olds published in September 2025.)
