New revised Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework is mandatory for all group and school-based early years providers in England. This new 2026 version was published 13 July 2026 and is effective from 1 September 2026.
The 2026 version includes important updates on statutory guidelines for safer sleeping arrangements, weaning, eating and children’s screen use in early years settings. Safeguarding and children’s welfare and wellbeing underpin the September 2026 updates to early years inspections.

All settings that provide care for children aged 0-5 must meet safeguarding and welfare requirements as set out in Section 3.
All children deserve the care and support they need to have the best start in life. The EYFS sets the standards that all early years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.
