Scotland: Supporting early learning and childcare ahead of the Holyrood elections

Ahead of the Holyrood elections on 7 May, NDNA Scotland has brought together a range of resources to help nursery members and parents make informed choices that support early learning and childcare in their local communities and across Scotland.

These resources explain what political parties are saying about early learning and childcare and why these decisions matter for children, families, and nursery providers.

NDNA Scotland Manifesto: The Best Start for Scotland’s Children

NDNA Scotland has published its manifesto, The Best Start for Scotland’s Children. The manifesto sets out what nurseries and families need from an Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) system that works well for everyone.

It focuses on children’s outcomes, support for families, and sustainable funding and conditions for nursery providers.

What are political parties promising for early learning and childcare?

NDNA has pulled together a simple summary of what each political party is pledging for early learning and childcare in Scotland.

This overview helps families and nursery staff understand how different policies could affect:

  • Nursery places and affordability
  • The early years workforce
  • Support for children’s learning and development

Letters for parents and local candidates

NDNA has created template letters that nurseries can share with parents or send directly to local election candidates.

These letters explain:

  • The benefits of high quality early learning and childcare
  • The challenges nurseries currently face
  • Why political support is important for children and families in Scotland

You can download the letter to local candidates here.

Find your local Holyrood candidates

Parents and nursery members can find out who is standing in their local area by entering a postcode here.
This makes it easier to contact candidates and raise issues that affect early learning and childcare locally.

Early learning and childcare factsheet for Scotland

NDNA has also produced a factsheet that explains the current picture of early learning and childcare in Scotland, including key facts, pressures on nurseries, and why investment in the sector matters.

This (resource) was super helpful and interesting to see each party’s statements side by side without having to go through each manifesto in its entirety. It saved me a lot of time and I appreciate NDNA doing it.
