Early maths experiences set the foundations for children’s future success. Offering a wide range of maths experiences, across all age groups, will provide opportunities for curiosity, fun and engaging activities and foster a love of maths.
Top tips for leading maths provision
- Review your maths curriculum to ensure a wide breadth of mathematical learning, including:
- Cardinality
- Counting
- Shape and spatial awareness
- Composition
- Pattern
- Comparison
- Measure
- Subitising
- Review your planning, across all age groups and consider the range of maths on offer. Consider whether activities and experiences are exciting and engaging, if maths is equally supported indoors and outdoors and if maths activities are differentiated to support all stages of development
- Speak to staff during supervisions about their levels of confidence with maths to identify any development needs and to support consistency in delivery of mathematical learning across all age groups and stages of development
- Review children’s assessment data to identify any gaps in maths learning, or whether children are making good progress in all aspects
- Carry out peer observations during planned maths experiences to review key strengths and areas for development
- Use staff meetings to focus on maths and how this is supported through home learning activities
- Share a bank of maths home learning ideas parents can choose from – ensuring they are activities that can be done free of a financial cost and can be incorporated into parents’ daily routines
