Birth to 5 Matters is guidance produced by the sector, for the sector, by the Early Years Coalition. Originally introduced to support the revised Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage in England in 2021, it has been updated in 2026 throughout and with additional content including sections on digital pedagogy, sustainability, birth to 2 and Reception and beyond.
It is non-statutory guidance which practitioners may use to support their implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage which sets out the legal requirements for delivering education for children from birth to 5 in England.
It has been updated to reflect the research evidence and meet the needs of practitioners today. It outlines the foundations of good practice and offers information and guidance for practitioners to consider how the Principles of the EYFS can be brought to life in their setting.
The Birth to 5 Matters website includes a free downloadable PDF version of the guidance, a web-based version of the content and lots of additional resources. The website uses the first edition material until mid-July when it will be updated with the second edition text.
