Activity - Cosy calm den

Early years activity: Cosy calm den

Periods of excitement or routine changes can often feel overwhelming for young children, bringing extra noise, activity and heightened emotions. This activity provides a cosy, calming retreat where children can step away from the busyness around them. The den offers a quiet space for moments of stillness and emotional regulation whenever children need a peaceful break.

Cosy calm den activity learning aims

  • Children begin to recognise their feelings and use calming strategies to manage their emotions in a safe and supportive environment
  • Develop confidence in making choices that support their wellbeing, such as choosing to spend time in a quiet, calming space when they need a break
  • Develop empathy by learning to respect others’ need for space and calm.

Resources you will need for this activity

  • Soft lighting
  • Blankets
  • Cushions
  • Relaxing music.

Cosy calm den activity outline

Create a cosy den using blankets, cushions and soft lighting. Play gentle, calming music to provide a soothing sensory environment. Invite children to enter the den, explore the space and settle into a calm area where they can focus on their senses and relax.

Introduce simple breathing exercises:

  • Hibernating bear breaths – breathe in slowly through the nose, then exhale with a long sigh, imagining they are a bear resting through the winter
  • Dragon breaths – take a deep breath and exhale slowly like a gentle dragon blowing smoke
  • Toy breaths – children lie down with a soft toy on their tummy and watch it rise and fall as they breathe in and out.

Breathing exercises are a wonderful way for children to relax and can be an effective strategy to help them regulate their emotions.

How to extend this activity

While in the cosy den, encourage children to use their imagination to create a story about who might live there. Perhaps it is a snoozing bear, a timid little rabbit or a lonely hedgehog. Ask the children to think about how the den makes these animals feel – is it a happy, safe and comforting place? Encourage discussion about feelings and emotions, supporting their development of emotional literacy and empathy.

Disclaimer: Activities with children must always be risk assessed, including for allergies or choking. Children must always have adequate supervision. Resources and materials must always be appropriate for children’s age and stage of development.
