Developing effective risk assessments (Wales)
Join NDNA Cymru and Play Wales to explore how to balance children’s need for challenge and exploration with the responsibility to keep them safe.
Children naturally seek out risk through play. It helps them build judgement and resilience. While risk and uncertainty are valuable, enabling adults must distinguish between positive challenges and unacceptable hazards.
The National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare for children up to the age of 12 years states that:
“The registered person is responsible for ensuring that:
24.4 Risk management of individual activities and play opportunities balances risk of harm against the benefits for the child, for example, in extending their knowledge of the world, developing skills and physical or emotional well-being.”
By recognising risk as an essential part of play, practitioners can develop thoughtful and proportionate risk assessments that protect children without limiting their opportunities to learn and grow.
