My special star – Inclusive Father’s Day craft activity
Children create a bright, colourful star-shaped suncatcher to celebrate someone special in their life. The star symbolises how their special person lights up their world – whether that’s a dad, mum, grandparent, carer, or another important person. This activity offers a colourful way to celebrate love that’s adaptable, inclusive, and enjoyable.
Inclusive Father’s Day activity learning aims
- To begin developing a positive sense of self and others by thinking about the special people in their lives
- To explore colour, texture and express ideas and preferences through creative choices
- To begin recognising that families and special people can be different for everyone.

- Star shapes cutout from card
- Ribbon or string for hanging

- Optional message labels, e.g. “Your are my shining star” or “My super star”.
“My special special star” activity guide
- Share a simple story or talk about the special people in our lives – people who help us, love us, and make us feel happy. Use inclusive language with examples like mums, dads, grandparents, carers, or friends to reflect different family situations
- Talk about how stars shine brightly in the sky just like the people that brighten up our lives. Invite the children to make a special star to celebrate someone who is important to them
- Head out on a nature walk, encouraging the children to collect natural treasures such as leaves, petals, small flowers, and grasses. These will be used to decorate their star
- During the nature walk, invite the children to look closely at what they find and talk about the different shapes they can spot. This is a great opportunity to introduce new vocabulary alongside reinforcing what they already know
- Provide each child with a star shape cut from card
- Encourage the children to decorate their star with the natural items they have collected, talking with them about who their star is for and why that person is special
- Fasten the ribbon/string to the star and hang up the finished stars. Celebrate all the stars by explaining that they show how everyone has someone special who helps to make them shine.
How to extend this inclusive Father’s Day activity
- Invite everyone’s ‘Star Person’ into your setting for a celebration event.
