Foundation Phase - Wales
the framework for children’s learning for 3 – 7 year olds in Wales
Helping your child to learn and grow…
Since September 2008 every child in Wales is entitled to receive Foundation Phase education for a minimum of two hours per day the term following their third birthday. This curriculum was created to bring more consistency and continuity to the education of your child at such an important stage in their development. Key facts about the Foundation Phase are:
- Some children find it easier to learn than others and it is reassuring to know that the Foundation Phase has been designed to help all children flourish, whatever their stage of development or learning ability
- Indoor and outdoor environments that are fun, exciting, stimulating and safe promote children’s development and natural curiosity to explore and learn through first-hand, real-life experiences
- In the Foundation Phase great emphasis is placed on developing your child’s communication skills
- The Foundation Phase has seven Areas of Learning, where stimulating structured play activities can be woven into the learning experiences
- Your child’s progress will be assessed through observing them in their everyday activities so that the information can be used to plan the next stage in their development.
